９０年代、現代アートの潮流は「多文化主義 (Multiculturalism)」に沸き、アジアやアフリカなど、「非西洋圏」からのアーティストが、またたく間に世界の表舞台へと躍り出た。その中で、「多文化主義」の背後にある構造的な不均衡と真実を、チェン・ゼンは鋭く考察している。安易な相互理解に逃げず、特定の属性にも回収されず、単なる批判に終始することもない。「僕たちは自分たちの立ち位置を見つければいい」。挑戦を続けたアーティストのこの言葉は、私たちにも静かに響いてくる。

In the 1990s, the contemporary art world emphasized multiculturalism more than ever. Artists from “non-Western” regions, such as Asia and Africa, shot to stardom. Amidst this fervor, Chen Zhen offered a sharp observation of the structural imbalances and hidden truths lying beneath the “multiculturalism” fever. Refusing the comfort of easy mutual understanding, resisting being categorized by specific labels, and moving beyond mere criticism, he spoke: “We just try to find our own position. That’s all.” The words of this artist, who never stopped challenging the status quo, resonate quietly within us today.
