Yugestone (Sun Stone 03)

CCA Islands is pleased to announce a new work by Haroon Mirza, opening in July 2025, and remaining on view through for 2 years.
Haroon Mirza has won international acclaim for installations that test the interplay and friction between light waves and electric current. He devises sculptures, performances and immersive installations that pry on ones awareness of their own experience.
An advocate of interference (in the sense of electro-acoustic orradio disruption), he creates situations that purposefully cross wires.
Yugetoyoshima, where CCA Islands is located was known for its high-quality granite stone.
For this project ”Yugestone (Sun Stone 03)”, Mirza created an outdoor installation using local stone and photovoltaic panel that responds to sunlight movement and intensity.
Embellished with resin, pigments, local sand and aluminium tape depicting Yugetoyoshima from the sea, the PV panel converts energy from the Sun into light emitting from the stone. In the morning as the Sun rises, a red light emits from the stone’s surface. As our planet rotates the light fades from red to yellow to brilliant white mimicking the Sun’s perceived colour. Then at dusk, the reverse. The work references neolithic monuments combining geological and human pre-history with modern technology, celebrating our communion with the Earth and our all power giving star.
