2022 recipients

Rujuta Rao is an artist based in New York. During her stay in Japan following her scholarship award, she focused on researching various textile techniques such as weaving and dyeing in Okinawa, as well as studying mangroves in southern Japan. In Amami Oshima, she learned about two types of mangroves and conducted research on mud dyeing at a local workshop. On the main island of Okinawa, she had meetings with mangrove experts at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology and conducted research on mangroves in the Yanbaru region, while also researching washi (Japanese paper) and shifu (paper cloth) on the main island of Japan.

Elodie Royer is a PhD candidate with an emphasis in her research on the work of female artists. She conducted her research in Okinawa focusing on interviewing female artists living and working there. At the crossroads of a theoretical and curatorial approach, Royer’s research intends to recreate links between practices of women artists from different regions in Japan, having in common to be strongly anchored within their territory, physically and spiritually.
