Mathew Hale

CCA Kitakyushu Project Gallery presented a new work by Mathew Hale, who lives and works in Berlin.

“The most fundamental element of ‘Alone, Les voici à parler:’ is a room in Japan, CCA Project Gallery. The other parts of the work come there as visitors.”

“As conscious beings we are involved in the unceasing process of managing the surprises of our interior life, and those of the exterior world, and of attempting to render them comfortable. There is no hard border to our selves. The sands shift and we build and rebuild. Anxiety is constant, delight sporadic.”

“A room in Kitakyushu becomes, to someone who lives in Berlin, a place where these processes of reception and emission become freshly visible and more available for consideration.”

“I was first here at CCA Kitakyushu nine years ago, accompanying my family. The stimulus was profound. Japanese material began appearing in new work, produced spontaneously in Berlin – and in relation to German cultural material.”

“‘Alone, Les voici à parler:’ is an attempt to form a constellation of these organically produced, and therefore symptomatic elements, in the form of a room.”
