Center for Contemporary Art, CCA Kitakyushu, is organising CCA Architecture Workshop 2015 in collaboration with Katsuhiro Miyamoto, professor at Osaka City University, Masashi Sogabe, professor at University of Kanagawa, and Jiro Ogawa, professor at Nippon Institute of Technology.

CCA Kitakyushu has been regularly organising architectural projects since its foundation in 1997, often collaborating with architects, considering architecture as an area where critical discourse has been formed in close relation to art. Since 2013, CCA Architecture Workshop has been organised each year with young architects and graduate schools’ architecture laboratories.

The workshops have mainly focused on the locality of CCA, Yahatahigashi-ku, and research the building and city planning in the ward from various points of view. In January 2013, in terms of the relationship with steel manufacture, which was the key industry of Yahata. In September 2013, examining the characteristics and effective use of the residences scattered over a slope in Yahata – the large number of these result from the rise of the Yawata Steel Works, founded in 1901, and constitute a specific landscape of this area. Last year, the meaning of ‘station’ was considered in terms of infrastructure: investigating life and living, history and development, along with the shopping streets and transportation networks in the residential and industrial areas, in order to develop a proposition.

This year, the workshop focuses exclusively on the area around Yahata station. Developed on a large scale from 2002 to 2005, the area was transformed to a new model from that originally planned for the steel industry. The announcement in 2014 of the move of Yahata City Hospital to the environs means that the area is once again transformed, after ten years, to a new context. Further transition around the symbolic Yahata Citizen Hall is also expected.

Future is always made on the extended line of history. When a city changes, how are history and new contexts mediated? What is the significance of the area around the station? Based on the results from the workshops of 2012–2014, this workshop will be considering change and future perspectives for Yahata.
