Renovation has been attracting a lot of attention since the beginning of the 21st century, and the relationship with art adds further impetus. In this lecture, Igarashi discusses examples within and outside of Japan. Igarashi curated Aichi Triennale 2013, where the shopping and residential areas were used as the exhibition sites, and he will explain how renovation was carried out, and evaluate the outcome.

Taro Igarashi is an architectural historian and critic, and professor of Tohoku University Graduate School. Igarashi has contributed numerous articles and essays to magazines and newspapers, and authored many publications such as ‘The lives of contemporary Japanese architects’ (2011). Igarashi has also curated many art/architecture exhibitions such as Aichi Triennale (2013) and he was the Commissioner for the Japanese Pavilion at the 11th International Architecture Exhibition, Venice Biennale (2008).
