CCA Kitakyushu presents a new work of Hamish Fulton.
CCA has worked with Hamish Fulton since its foundation of 1997, started with his walk at Mt. Sarakura of Kitakyushu as the pre-opening workshop in 1994. Then CCA presented his project in 1999 after his walk at Hikosan that is known as one of the sacred mountains, and in 2006 after his seven one day walk at Yakushima. Also CCA published his Artist Book ‘Higurashi’ (2000) and ‘OLD TREE’ (2008).
This time Hamish Fulton stays and walks for 14 days in Kuma-Kogen, highland in Ehime prefecture of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan’s four main islands. Shikoku is known for the Shikoku Pilgrimage ‘Ohenro’, visiting 88 temples spreading across the islands to trace the holy man Kobo Daishi’s (774-835) footsteps. Fulton resides near Iwaya-ji, the one of these 88 temples. It is also nearby the rare formation of gigantic stones, odd rocks and caves that contains a strata accumulated during the Miocene period. This group of gigantic rocks is called Furuiwaya, where we find a folktale of Kobo Daishi and Amanojaku (Japanese imaginary monster like ogre).
Hamish Fulton stays in Shikoku from November 10th to 25th, and in CCA Kitakyushu from November 26th to December 5th, 2018.
