CCA Kitakyushu Project Gallery presented a new work by Anri Sala.
“In a rearrangement, which illustrates the scene that led to “the hand of god” goal, fifteen Buddha statuettes embody different players in the stationary moments that anticipated the famous goal scored by Maradona as the result of a handball in the quarterfinal match of the 1986 FIFA World Cup played between England and Argentina. Alongside the drawing of the movement that led to the goal, each player is represented by a different Buddha statue, whereas the god with the many hands personifies Maradona.”
“As the “miraculous” action accelerates, a live commentator struggles to follow it: “here is Maradona and England have contained him pretty well, so far, it’s looking dangerous, that’s a poor clearance, Maradona with Shilton, looked like hand ball that. Maradona is celebrating and the goal’s gonna be given. Shilton furious and so is Peter Reid, and England Manager Bobby Robson can’t believe it. Definitely looks like hand ball, but the goal’s…”
